An AA member said early on in recovery that they felt no relief from the pain they were no longer able to anesthetize with booze. Telling their sponsor they were going to have a drink, the sponsor asked,
Do you want a drink, or do you want relief?
A question I had to – have to – answer when a drink seems like the solution to the question, how do I stop hurting?
I came to believe there would never be enough drinks to give me the pain relief I wanted. So, I became willing to get help.
Getting help is not a one shot deal. Nor does one-size help fit everybody.
But some days I completely forget this truth . . . or I don’t want to remember anything except how good that first sip made me feel when being alive hurt. But the anesthesia always wore off, if it ever took at all.
I am sorry you hurt dear reader– and I pray right now the God of my understanding, Christ the Lord, meets you and gives you rest for today.
Who [or what] we love above all else is who we worship, and who we worship controls us.” ― Edward T. Welch, Side by Side: Walking with Others in Wisdom and Love
To whom, or what, are you giving over the control your mind and heart?
